It was done from a photo of the Maine coastal shore given to me by a teacher who visited the area while on sabatical. Doing it with a palette knife vs a brush helped me keep it more painterly. The bowl in her photograph was translucent, and I must admit defeat with painting that translucency and painted it a more opaque bowl. For the sake of art, some things have to be altered for the viewer to see a more understandable piece....and, this was one of those times. I also cropped and flipped her photograph... But, the knife was still picking up the paint, so I just continued to go with it. It gave me some effects, here and there, that I didn't mind and was thankful for. I love figs and have 3 trees in our yard. Every year for the last 5 years, I get figs, green and hard, much the size of marbles. But they never ripen for me. So, to do this challenge made me think of sitting around the pond in the afternoon, eating fresh, ripened figs and drinking champagne. This will be the closest I get to that delightful dream unless I find them at a market someplace in the area, and even that is a rarity for this area of South Central Pennsylvania. I tried another palette knife piece, a little larger this time. I'd like to go even larger, but don't know about how to handle the amount of paint I would have to put out. A lot of interested people stop to talk, and acrylics can dry on you fast, especially when there is a breeze. I've tried using the wet palette, but that can liquify my paint and I want the full body consistency for the knife work. However, there are 3 receptions today; I have posted the one "Winery by the Woods" Soiree being held at Hunters Valley Winery today from 5 -8:00 pm in Liverpool, PA. The Golden Haze painting will be showing at the Art &amp; Soul Gallery at the West Shore Farmer's Market in Lemoyne, PA for the month of August. Some interesting or maybe amusing facts about this painting is that it was rejected twice by the York Art Association. Once, because it was 1" too large to meet the requirements of the prospectus and once because it was too small....it needed to be 36" or larger on all sides, and of course despite the fact that it is 49" on the one side, it is still only 24" in height. A lesson to all to carefully read the prospectus. It did take an award at the Harrisburg Art Association last year, so I was happy for that. The farm's wet, puddled lane caught my eye. Off to the right, in a view not shown, were a herd of cows. A newborn calf had gotten away from his mom, and somehow through the electric fence, and 2 of our brave and compassionate artists attempted to reunite this calf with her mom. A kodak moment in it's own right and making memories. When the owner arrived, we made sure to alert him to the predicament that the calf found itself in. So, we left assured that the little one would be looked after. I did "flip" Gary's photograph so the deer is walking from left to right in my painting. </div><div align="left"></div><div align="left">The mule deer are named for their unusually large ears, but they resemble mules in no other way. It was interesting to do research and read about the differences between a mule deer and a whitetail deer. The "muleys" are less adaptable and remain more of a wilderness species. Mule deer seldom raise their shorter, ropelike tails, which are dull white with black tips. And, the main beams of their antlers each branch into two beams, each then branching again. There are a lot more differences, but too many to name them all in this blogspot. A Tulip Portrait was the subject for May. The tulip itself was painted with acrylics and I used the new Atelier Interactive, but for the background I used inks. I wanted to keep the background dark, but still have some color and design. We were to visit the Canary Islands, use Goggle map street view, and wander around the streets until we found something we wanted to paint. ....a virtual paintout. I found this boat that was out of the water for, perhaps repairs, and a dramatic skyscape, that caught my eye rather quickly. I'm a low key painter, which one can see in this painting, but again, the camera does add more darkness. I tried to keep it looser than I have been painting for these challenges...I tend to tighten up when painting from photos. Several plein air artists went to visit and paint in Katie's beautiful gardens. Irises, flowers of all kinds, gardens, sheds, roosters, chickens, turkeys....all make for ideal subject matter. Across the road is Stoney Creek which is a well know PA trout fishing area. Can't wait to get back there this year. My rendition was painted in acrylic on canvas after Caravaggio...the upper left and lower right-hand corners of the photo is reflecting natural light from the window (it is much darker on the painting itself). It was done for Michelle Burnett's Challenge Following the Masters. This last challenge was to study the Italian Renaissance and choose a Master of that period and either paint something of that artist or a portion of it, or try to apply their technique to one of ours. I chose to paint this, not only for this challenge, but also to enter in the upcoming Easter Exhibit at Art and Soul Gallery in Lemoyne, Pennsylvania. This themed art exhibit entitled "Palm Sunday through Resurrection" will run run from Saturday, March 27th, 2010 to April 24, 2010. The opening reception will be Saturday, March 27th, 2010 from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. This gallery is located at the West Shore Farmer's Market, 2nd floor, 900 Market Street, Lemoyne, PA. The challenge for February was Children and Pets - Matching Sets. Several photographs were provided if we wanted to choose one or more to paint. This curly-headed little girl with her curly-headed dog caught my heart. What a winning smile she has. The dog was very difficult to paint...so black, I had to really struggle to find the eyes and anatomical definitions like the ears, nose, etc. Unfortunately, even though I finally completed the painting by the due date, I was unable to get it off to James to have it posted on his blogspot. This month we were to paint the San Francisco Bay area with Santa Rosa to the north, Atioch to the east, and San Jose to the south. Using the Google Map Street View, I found this beautiful scene in the San Jose area and loved the colors. There were several others of equal beauty, so hopefully I will have time to revisit and paint more of these rural scenes. I used a palette knife thinking I would loosen up when painting these photographs onto a small canvas, however, it still is a bit fussier than I like. But, sometimes, I just end the "conversation" between the painting and me, and just let it rest. This month's challenge was to be inspired by the work and philosophy of Robert Henri. When Henri's circle was rejected in the National Academy of Design exhibit in 1907, he organized a show of his own that included a group known as "The Eight"...Arthur Davies, Robert Henri, William Glackens, Ernest Lawson, George Luks, Maurice Prendergast, John Sloan, and Everett Shinn. It was revolutionary for it's subject, gritty urban scenes and "art for life's sake". Their work would later be characterized as the Ashcan School. We could choose to copy one of his works or be inspired to paint a dirty urban from the Ashcan School movement. I decided to copy one of his many portraits, Catharine.
