This painting was done from a photograph posted on Gary Keimig's
Wilderness Art Challenge Blogspot. I did "flip" Gary's photograph so the deer is walking from left to right in my painting.
The mule deer are named for their unusually large ears, but they resemble mules in no other way. It was interesting to do research and read about the differences between a mule deer and a whitetail deer. The "muleys" are less adaptable and remain more of a wilderness species. Mule deer seldom raise their shorter, ropelike tails, which are dull white with black tips. And, the main beams of their antlers each branch into two beams, each then branching again. There are a lot more differences, but too many to name them all in this blogspot. However, enjoy the painting and be sure to visit Gary's
