This painting was done for Lela Stankovic's Challenge on Paint and Draw Together Blogspot. We were to try to use the sfumato technique used by the masters where edges were lost and found. To quote what Lela described on her blog, she wanted "to create a composition with very soft lost and found edges. Something similar to having an impression that objects are appearing from and getting lost into the darkness behind, so frequent in the 17th century old masters oil paintings. Leonardo daVinci called this technique sfumato and described it as "without lines or borders, in the manner of smoke or beyond the focus plane".
My painting is so dark that I think I will later try to add some lighter colors, maybe in the metal. Although I think it is supposed to be reflecting the dark tablecloth. I think this is perfect as it is, Pat. Thank you for the description of the word sfumato too. I was going to go look it up.
Thanks, Sherry. I never heard the term either, until Lela challenged us to try is.
Hilda, thank you so much for your visit and comments. I, in my haste, hit delete instead of publish. I was going to lighten the silver metal on the vase. It seems like all the artists participating in Lela's challenge painted it much lighter and silvery than I. I'm wondering if my printer printed the photo darker, and I didn't take that into consideration. I will have to be more aware the next time.
Lovely painting Pat! I love it the way it is. I might have to try this challenge. It will be good for me to try and paint this dark.
Thanks, Carol. Hope you try it; I will look forward to seeing it.
This is absolutely beautiful, Pat. I especially like the shimmer of the reflections in the silver vase. Gorgeous!
Oh Pat - I love it! The reflections are spot on and the cherries are delightful! Thanks for sharing Leonardo's description of sfumato-
