Donato's Dance of Eternal Spring - impressionistic representational acrylic and oil painting of Donato's fountain at Italian Lake by Pennsylvania Contemporary Artist Pat Koscienski

Donato's Dance of Eternal Spring
16" x 12"
Acrylic & Oil on board
SOLD
This painting was started plein air at Italian Lake in Harrisburg, PA and finished in my studio.  Below is a history of this sculpture...very interesting reading.

One of the most famous legends about chocolate maker Milton S Hershey involves a fountain that he bought for his mansion in Hershey, Pennsylvania in the early 1900s.
The story goes that when Hershey saw the 'Dance of Eternal Spring' fountain with its three nude nymphs, it so offended his conservative Pennsylvania Dutch tastes that he refused to have it placed on the grounds of his home.
In all fairness, the fountain is beautiful and the model the sculptor chose for the three nymphs was one of America's great beauties of the day... Madeline Stokes.
Born Amanda Straw in Fishing Creek Valley just north of Harrisburg in 1875, she changed her name to Madeline Stokes after moving to Philadelphia and taking to the vaudeville stage. She was a much sought after model into her late 30s, gracing the cover of numerous magazines. Alexander Caldwell II used her as a model for a sundial in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park and her likeness graces a mural in the governor's reception room in Pennsylvania's State Capitol. She also is said to have danced in the nude at a night club in New York City for $5 a night.
Scandalous. No wonder Mr Hershey didn't want the statue in his garden.
However, the truth behind the story might have more to do with Hershey's legendary Pennsylvania Dutch tendency to be conservative with his money than with his conservative tastes.
In 1909, Hershey hired Philadelphia sculptor Giuseppe Donato to produce a fountain for his garden. Hershey and Donato supposedly agreed to a final price of $3100 and Hershey made a $2000 downpayment. When the work was completed, the bill was for $31,000 - 10 times the original agreement.
Whatever his reasons, Hershey refused to pay for the statue and Donato eventually won a $24,000 decision in court. Surely the legal defeat left a bitter taste in the sweets-maker's mouth and that statue sat in a crate at the Hershey railroad station until 1920 when he donated the it to Harrisburg City's Reservoir Park.
It remained there for 18 years until the J Horace McFarland Rose Garden at the Polyclinic Hospital opened. There it became a tradition for the seniors of the School of Nursing to clothe the nymphs in lingerie the night before graduation.
In 1971 the hospital paved over the rose garden to make a parking lot and the fountain was moved to another city park. At the July 16 unveiling at Italian Lake was a special guest, Madeline Stokes herself1.

Flowers and Watering Can - acrylic floral still life painting on slate by Pennsylvania Contemporary Artist Pat Koscienski

Flowers and Watering Can
12" x 7"
Acrylic on slate
Sold

This was a first for me...painting on slate.  It was a commission for a friend who hangs this piece outside of her house beneath her name.  The photo shows the slate laying on my studio carpet.  My only concern was how the acrylic paint was going to hold up in cold weather.  I did apply UV varnish to give it protection against fading, however, I would sure hate to see the paint craze when those temperatures drop.  If you have any questions, contact PAT.  If you would like to see more of my paintings, both representational and abstract, please visit my website at:

Fields of Gold - original acrylic plein air landscape painting of hills of sunflowers by Pennsylvania Contemporary Artist Pat Koscienski

Fields of Gold
8" x 10"
Acrylic on canvas

This painting was done plein air near Messiah College in Pennsylvania.  It had rained hard for several days before, and no matter how long we waited for the sun to draw the heads upward, it was not going to happen.  I went back several weeks later to punch in the dark tree & underbrush on the right;  the sunflowers' heads still were not at their grandest.  However, I still liked the contrast of the dark tree with the yellow, rolling hills.  And, who couldn't love that misty blue mountain in the background.

This painting is one of four of my paintings on exhibit with the SVPAP (Susquehanna Valley Plein Air Painters) group at Gallery 2318 in Camp Hill, PA.  Exhibit will be open every weekend in October....Saturday, 10 am - 4 pm;  Sunday, noon - 4 pm.

If in the area, please stop in.  There are 21 artists displaying their plein air paintings..

Morning's Quiet Secret - original acrylic plein air landscape painting of Pinchot Park Lake inlet by Pennsylvania Contemporary Artist Pat Koscienski

"Morning's Quiet Secret"
11" x 14"
Acrylic on linen canvas

This painting was painted plein air at Pinchot State Park in Lewisberry, Pennsylvania.  It required a 2nd visit where several more hours were put into the painting.  A piece of land juts out into a small portion of the lake, much like a peninsula, creating this tranquil cove.  It was very peaceful the first visit there.  On the 2nd visit I had 2 visitors who came to fish and read.  The grandmother did the reading and a young boy did the fishing.  It made for an interesting morning.  Once again, I am having trouble with google rotating my photos.  After many hours, days, spent retaking photos with my Canon I decided to try my Hewlett-Packard with success.  However, the color of the blues are not as true as the Canon.  If you have any questions, or wish to purchase, contact PAT.  If you would like to see more of my paintings, both representational and abstract, please visit my website at:

New Cumberland Spillway - acrylic plein air landscape painting of the Yellow Breeches by Pennsylvania Contemporary Artist Pat Koscienski

New Cumberland Spillway
14" x 11"
Acrylic on stretched canvas

This painting was started on 6-19-13 when some of the members of the SVPAP (Susquehanna Valley Plein Air Painters) met at this park.  I usually never paint longer than 2-3 hrs because of the light change.  However, I was not satisfied with the painting and went back by myself July 26, over a month later,  and did another 2-3 hrs worth of work. The painting doesn't have the 2 hr fast draw look, but I'm liking the more finished look a little better.   I walk this park several times a week, weather permitting.  It is 3/4 miles around, with the Yellow Breeches surrounding over half of the walk.  It is beautiful and during my 3 mile walk, I spend a lot of time studying this section of the stream.  New Cumberland, Pa., is where this stream empties into the Susquehanna River.  It is a fisherman's dream, and never a day goes by when there isn't at least 1 fisherman throwing out his line, but more often there are several.  The spillway is their favorite spot.  If you have any questions, or wish to purchase contact PAT.  If you would like to see more of my paintings, both representational and abstract, please visit my website at:
