This painting was started on 6-19-13 when some of the members of the SVPAP (Susquehanna Valley Plein Air Painters) met at this park.  I usually never paint longer than 2-3 hrs because of the light change.  However, I was not satisfied with the painting and went back by myself July 26, over a month later,  and did another 2-3 hrs worth of work. The painting doesn't have the 2 hr fast draw look, but I'm liking the more finished look a little better.   I walk this park several times a week, weather permitting.  It is 3/4 miles around, with the Yellow Breeches surrounding over half of the walk.  It is beautiful and during my 3 mile walk, I spend a lot of time studying this section of the stream.  New Cumberland, Pa., is where this stream empties into the Susquehanna River.  It is a fisherman's dream, and never a day goes by when there isn't at least 1 fisherman throwing out his line, but more often there are several.  The spillway is their favorite spot.  If you have any questions, or wish to purchase contact PAT.  If you would like to see more of my paintings, both representational and abstract, please visit my website at:

This painting was done for Lela Stankovic's Challenge on Paint and Draw Together Blogspot.  We were to try to use the sfumato technique used by the masters where edges were lost and found.  To quote what Lela described on her blog, she wanted  "to create a composition with very soft lost and found edges. Something similar to having an impression that objects are appearing from and getting lost into the darkness behind, so frequent in the 17th century old masters oil paintings. Leonardo daVinci called this technique sfumato and described it as "without lines or borders, in the manner of smoke or beyond the focus plane".

However, I started to see some flowers on a mountain side and decided to stay with that. I did not stop to photograph different stages for fear of breaking that right brain period that I was in. I overlooked posting this painting from my winter series on my blogspot.  I really wanted it included because there are clients and buyers who appreciate winter painting all year long and not just in the winter.  That it sold, is proof of that.  It is one of the 4 winter scenes that I was inspired to paint because of the heavy snows that we got this past winter.  This is the lane that goes up to our neighbors' house and property. This painting is done from the same photo I used in "Forest's Secret Beauty".  This, however, was done with brushes, much larger than I usually use, whereas "Forest's Secret Beauty" was done with a palette knife.  As you can see, I try to make a painting "mine" no matter how often I paint it.  I don't worry about painting each stone or spray of water where the photo shows it.  Composition, color, and texture is what I strive for.  I feel there is more energy in this painting than "Forest's Secret Beauty", maybe because of the looseness.  However, "Forest's Secret Beauty" shows more texture.  Which look do you prefer?

This acrylic painting was done using a palette knife.  I wanted to try to paint a little looser, thinking the palette knife would help me keep it more painterly.  However, I now know I can get tight with detail using a brush and even a palette knife.  Application of paint using the palette knife, does, however, help me pick up the paint more.  I regret not using a thickening medium, since my acrylic paint can tend to get too liquid since I lay it out on moist paper towels.  If you have any questions, or wish to purchase, contact PAT.  If you would like to see more of my works, representational or abstract, please visit my website at:
