"Peasant Girl" by Pat Koscienski

"Peasant Girl"
30" x 26"
Pastel on canson

"Peasant Girl" was painted in Portrait/Figure class at York Art Association in York, PA. Amanda, the vice president of YAA at the time borrowed the costume from York Little Theater and posed for 2 of our classes. Painting portraits and figures from real life can be challenging, but can be quite a learning experience forcing one to see the fine shadows and color of the skin and contours of the underlying bone structure. This is so very beautifully done, Pat! I love her costume too and the way you've faded it out at the bottom of the piece. Funnily enough, I was thinking that her features looked quite a bit like you! LOL Your talents are limitless, my friend.

Summer, you have a good eye. Another artist who knows me also felt that there was more of a resemblance to me than to Amanda. Maybe the face, but the figure is definitely Amanda's. It's eerie, because I painted her live in class and had the photo for reference in the studio.

This must have been fun! What a great job you did. I agree...she looks like you! A portrait instructor once told our class that we always give the subject some feature of ours! I think it's fascinating the way that works! In my case it's the deep grin lines...I really have to be careful not to pass those on! Yikes! This is a large piece! Wow!

Thanks, Rosemary, I never heard of that. Those poor models.
