Forest's Secret Beauty - acrylic palette knife landscape painting of waterfall by Pennsylvania Contemporary Artist Pat Koscienski

"Forest's Secret Beauty"
10" x 8"
Acrylic on canvas

This acrylic painting was done using a palette knife.  I wanted to try to paint a little looser, thinking the palette knife would help me keep it more painterly.  However, I now know I can get tight with detail using a brush and even a palette knife.  Application of paint using the palette knife, does, however, help me pick up the paint more.  I regret not using a thickening medium, since my acrylic paint can tend to get too liquid since I lay it out on moist paper towels.  If you have any questions, or wish to purchase, contact PAT.  If you would like to see more of my works, representational or abstract, please visit my website at:

This is so beautifully painted, Claire. I'm working on a painting right now, using a palette knife for the first time. I could use lessons from you..I love the way the rocks look...SO realistic yet painterly!! Congratulations on a wonderful job!

Love this, Pat. I instantly get the sensation that I am standing there, hearing the water rush down over the falls. Absolutely beautiful! Looking forward to getting out there to paint :)

Pat, I have the same problems. Both with tight application even with a knife. And with acrylics getting too thin on me. Really makes palette knife painting with acrylics a challenge - but you did great on this piece. Love your greenery. This is one I would love to see in person.

It is beautiful, Pat! Is this the same location as on the piece I have? Looks like it only maybe a slightly different angle.

Thank you, Hilda. But, I am a novice with the knife and could use lessons myself. I can't wait to see your painting.

Thank you, Claire. I can't wait to get out, either. Hearing nature can be very inspiring. It always amazes me to see artists with earphones listening to music, when nature sings its own songs.

Thanks, Nan. I thought I was the only one having these problems. I like the effects of the knife and all those different knives, but it can be frustrating.

Thanks, Sherry. Your painting is one of the falls at Yosemite. I don't know where this one is. When the teachers gave me their vacation photos I should have marked them on the back; they were very generous with their 2nd copy and I have so many; it was hard to keep track.

Beautiful painting!, Pat! You did a wonderful job with the palette knife. I have not gotten brave enough to try.

Pat, this is wonderful! I have never used the palette knife but your beautiful rocks and cascading water are indeed an inspiration! Wish I could look over your shoulder! This is a beautiful little painting!
