"Dan's Winter Barn" by Pennsylvania Daily Painter Pat Koscienski

"Dan's Winter Barn"
12" x 16"
Oil on board
SOLD
"Dan's Winter Barn" was painted from a photograph taken at a Dover farm where I painted plein aire many times in more clement weather. I loved the way the sunlight shined on the lane between the buildings. The ruts in the snow were deep and the colors were great. This painting was bought by a fellow artist and I am glad to know it has a good home. It was one of my favorites.

Oil on canvas
"Winter at Rockville Bridge" was painted in the studio from a photograph taken on the west shore of the Susquehanna River looking south. It was another snowy day that left a measurable amount of snow. The bit of sun shining through the arches gave a little warmth to the painting. This painting is exhibiting at CALC in Carlisle, PA . "All I Want For Christmas is...."by Pennsylvania Daily Painter Pat Koscienski

"All I Want For Christmas is...."
Mixed Media
6" x 6"

"All I Want For Christmas is...." was done for James Parker's blog Windows to the Words Art Challenge. The theme was to paint something we wanted for Christmas eg a diamond ring or new lap top computer, etc. I always like this doggie photo James had posted in a previous challenge. After giving some thought to what I really want for Christmas....love, everyone wants love (even dogs)....kisses, everyone wants kisses (even dogs)... Living so close to Hershey, Pa ...Hershey kisses came to mind quickly. I never realized, until I went to paint one, though, that the white paper tag reading "kisses" leans to the left to read kisses. Of course, I needed this to lean into the painting, so that is why it reads as a mirror image. Then, couldn't get the metallic glimmer in the red foil quite glimmery enough, so took the foil and paper off the kiss and collaged it to the painting and ate the chocolate. That's how easy an acrylic painting can turn into a mixed media painting. If interested in purchasing, contact Pat at patsfineart@hotmail.com

"Ala Monet" by Pennsylvania Daily Painter Pat Koscienski

"Ala Monet"
Acrylic
6" x 8"

"Ala Monet" is painted after Claude Monet's "Bathing at La Grenouillere"/"Les Bains de La Grenouillere". This was in reponse to a challenge on Michelle Burnett's blog Following the Masters. The challenge was to paint something of or like an artist that influenced us in some way. I chose to paint after Monet. This painting done by Monet was "executed outdoors, and the brushwork is a witness to the speed required to capture the transitory effects which such scenery offered." Also, "in this painting Monet's brushwork is vigorous", "has distinguishable brushmarks", "his brushwork is strongly descriptive". Monet rejected traditional, smooth brushwork which created an illusion of surface texture; instead, his varied handling helps to evoke the actural natural textures. All reasons why Monet has influenced my painting. "Noontime Activity" by Pennsylvania Daily Painter Pat Koscienski

"Noontime Activity"
Acrylic
9" x 12"
"Noontime Activity" was painted for Bill Guffey's Virtual Paintout Challenge. Using Google Map Street View we were to tour through Mexico City and surrounding areas to find a scene to paint. This particular scene was from Victoria/Dolores, Cuauhtemoc, D.f., Mexico. The people in this scene just seemed to be on lunch, with packages in hand, food cart nearby, shops, and a flurry of activity. I couldn't resist the color of the building and the cart. "Winter at Fort Hunter" by Pennsylvania Daily Painter Pat Koscienski

"Winter at Fort Hunter"
31" x 43" framed
24" x 36" matted
18" x 30" unframed
Oil on shellacked 300lb w/c paper

"Winter at Fort Hunter" was painted from a photograph taken at Fort Hunter. Those familiar with Fort Hunter...my back is to the mansion door and I am facing south on the east shore of the Susquehanna River. The Rockville Bridge, the world's (?) longest, stone railroad bridge, is seen in the distance. It was a cold, crisp day and I think the colors reflect that. I tried to add a little warmth to it with the yellow ochers. It is an oil painting done on shellacked, 300lb watercolor paper. You can check out the sizes above from unframed, matted, and matted with frame. The frame is a plain, plein aire-like frame silverish in color which goes well with the alizarin crimson in the painting. At present, there is plexiglass over the painting. Since we got our first snowfall yesterday, in the Harrisburg area of South Central Pennsylvania, I couldn't resist posting this painting. "Cross of Hope"
10" x 10"
Acrylic
"Cross of Hope" was done using a lot of acrylic medium to sculpt as well as paint this composition...color and texture being the main goal. I felt that the cross that developed from this sculpting, hopefully, reflected some symbolism for us to recognize as a need within each of us. This painting will be exhibited at the Art & Soul Gallery, 900 Market Street, 2nd floor, Suite 13. This is at the West Shore Farmer's Market in Lemoyne, PA. The new owner of Art & Soul, Lyn O'Neal, will have a GRAND RE-OPENING on FRIDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2009 from 4:30 TO 7 PM Stop by for some free light refreshments, meet the artists, and enjoy original art works by more than 20 local artists. "Turkey" by Pat Koscienski

"Turkey"
Oil on board
14" x 18"
"Turkey" was painted using a different technique than I was used to. Instead of mixing my linseed oil in my paint, I placed the linseed oil on the part of the turkey I was working on. When I applied my paint, it then "spread" since the paint was thick and the oil caused it to move. Thus giving a feathery look without painting each hair. It gives a very nice look, however, the drying time between applications of the linseed oil became annoying to me, since I tend to paint more quickly. If interested in purchasing, contact Pat at patsfineart@hotmail.com. I do want to wish everyone a Happy & Safe Thanksgiving!

"Tryin' To Make a Living" by Pat Koscienski

"Tryin' To Make A Living"
8" x 10"
Acrylic

This painting was done for Karin Jurick's DSFDF (Different Strokes From Different Folks) week 52-54 challenge "Airport Travelers". And, believe me...it was a "challenge". It's not 100% without error, however, I'm glad to have completed it and pleased that I was able to take on yet another subject that I would not have chosen on my own. As with each new challenge in life, learning and growth takes place. And, now I can (virtually) fly off to Halifax, Nova Scotia and paint a landscape there for my Virtual Paintout challenge. "Coy Koi" by Pat Koscienski

"Coy Koi"
5" x 7"
Acrylic on canvas
"Coy Koi" is one of my paintings that started off as a nonobjective abstract painting. My husband had just put in our pond so we were preoccupied with our Koi everyday. I think this intuitively came out in this painting. I usually put my abstracts on the http://www.dailypaintersabstract.blogspot.com/ , however, I see an almost representational painting in this one, so thought I would post this simultaneously on both blogspots. "Ala Van Gogh" by Pat Koscienski

"Ala Van Gogh"
5" x 7"
Acrylic on canvas

"Ala Van Gogh" was initially painted for Michelle Burnette's challenge on Follow the Masters blogspot. It was previously posted, but I made some changes on the part of the field that goes down to the stream. I thought I would post this painting with the initial painting so everyone could compare the change. However, being the novice that I am in the blogging world, I deleted my whole posting when I only wanted to delete just the photo that I posted (I realized the color needed adjusted). Learning keeps taking place, but it sometimes feels like it never ends. And, that can bring in frustration, especially when it becomes time consuming. LOL I'm sure you have all been through it. Sorry, I lost all your wonderful comments, to boot.

"Autumn Morning"
Oil on canvas
8" x 10"
With autumn here and leaves in Pennsylvania starting to change color, I thought I would post some of my autmun paintings from past years. "Autumn Morning" was inspired by my drive home....driving down Pleasantville Road approaching Benyou's barn. The light was hitting like the light in a John Baptiste Camille Corot's painting....dark in the foreground and light in the midground....directing attention to this area. "28 R. da Veronica, Lisbon, Portugal Revisited" by Pat Koscienski

"28 R. da Veronica, Lisbon, Portugal Revisited"
10" x 10"
Acrylic on canvas
I worked on this piece a little more (from the September Virtual Paintout). I changed the hue of the buildings on the viewer's left side from a warm sienna to the grayed blue/green of the right side, but lighter in value. I felt this unified the painting a little better. I also lightened the buildings on the right, but made sure to keep the left side the lightest. This helped the street look darker and hopefully put the focal point on the building near the cars. Do you feel this helped? Or, do you feel the first version was better? Let me know... I'm in Belfast this month and need to work on scoping out a vista for that painting. Kings Gap Vista I by Pat Koscienski

" Kings Gap Vista I"
20" x 10"
Acrylic

"Kings Gap Vista I" is an acrylic painting on canvas painted plein air at Kings Gap State Park in Pennsylvania. Several of the artists in our plein air group painted at least once/week during the month of September to prepare paintings for the Kings Gap Fall Festival on October 4. It could not have been a nicer day for a paint out. It's a 4 mile drive from the entrance of the park to the top where the mansion and gardens are located...the road is barely wide enough for 2 cars and nothing but sharp curve after sharp curve. But, once at the top, the view is spectacular. The herb and flower gardens, pond, and mansion are true subjects for plen air painters. This painting was done using a staining technique. Helen Frankenthaler, who used oil to stain her unprimed canvases, greatly influenced this painting. Because I used acrylic, and not oil paint, I will not have trouble with the canvas rotting as some of hers are beginning to do. Presently, this painting is in an exhibit at the Art Association of Harrisburg in PA and has taken an award in the "Structures" exhibit. The reception is Sunday, September 13 starting at 11:00 am. This is a starting point for the Gallery Walk in Harrisburg, PA the same day from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm. If in the area, come join us. "And, Then There Was One" (DSFDF week 46-48 challenge -Cupcakes)

"And, Then There Was One"
Acrylic
8x10
"And, Then There Was One" was painted for the DSFDF (Different Strokes From Different Folks) week 46-48 challenge--Cupcakes.) The photo Karin Jurick posted for all to paint was a row of 5/6 cupcakes. The cupcakes were so appealing that I wanted to just reach into the monitor and have one with my coffee. To paint this vision was more of a challenge than I anticipated. Needless to say, I went through some cupcakes of my own. The other challenge I didn't anticipate was photographing the painting. I really had difficulty with getting the color of my painting on the screen. I knew the blue background of the monitor portion of the painting was a grayed blue, but I kept getting a phthalo-like blue. After many photo shots of my painting under different lighting and in different locations without success, I finally resorted to using Photo Shop to get the colors that are closer to the original painting. I'm still not sure the photo portrays the original painting. No doubt, this process will become better, or maybe even easier, with more practice. Mixed media
24 x 30
Abstracted Wetlands is a mixed media acrylic painting done on paper. I then glued the piece to a board and framed it in a white frame...no glass or plexiglass needed. This allows the viewer to truly appreciate the texture that is in this piece. Being a plein air painter & often painting at wetlands greatly influenced the creation of this piece. It will be 1 of 20 new abstract paintings that will be showing at 2nd Floor Gallery, 105 S. Market St., Mechanicsburg, PA., during the month of September. "San Francisco Street"

"San Francisco Street"
Acrylic
12" x 6"
"San Francisco Street" was my first challenge done from and posted on the Different Strokes From Different Folks blog spot. It was painted from a photograph posted by Karin Jurick. A lot of angst went into this painting. I've painted from photographs before, but usually when it is used as a reference photo....I've painted at the site, take a photo, and make corrections or punch it up in the studio. This was done from a photo of a location I had never been to. The advantage of this, is that it helped keep me from painting the details that I may have been tempted to otherwise do. Also, it did challenge me to paint a subject I would not have chosen. Growth cannot take place if we don't strive to attain another level. I can't wait for the next challenge. "River's Bend" by Pat Koscienski

River's Bend
Oil
8" x 10"

"River's Bend" is an 8" x 10" oil painting done plein air at Fort Hunter in
Dauphin, PA. The Susquehanna River was low and early morning mist could be seen behind the river's bend. The Fort Hunter Mansion, where I was painting, was a distance away, but I decided to paint a close up of the area where light, mist, and rocks accentuated the scene. "Bee Balm" by Pat Koscienski

"Bee Balm" is an 14" x 11" acrylic painting done on canvas at a fellow artist's estate. The color of the flowers prove a wonderful complement against the greens of the landscape....the piece of dead wood directs the viewer's eye diagonally into the painting and the greens of the foliage lead to the alizaron colors of the bee balm. The mist in the background over the Fishing Creek Stream adds to the depth of the painting. "Bee Balm" was done plein air on a wonderful cool morning in Pennsylvania. Bate's Barn by Pat Koscienski

Bate's Barn
12" x 16"
Oil
SOLD

This 12x16 inch oil painting was done plein air at a farm off Carlisle Pike Rd., in Mechanicsburg, PA. The small window-like opening to the far left of the basement wall was to a room where the owner & his family would go during Indian raids. A musket could be safely aimed from this small opening, thus giving the owner protection during an attack. Alot of history rooted in this barn. This painting is done on shellacked plywood with some of the staining allowed to remain unpainted, thus giving alot of unity to the painting.
