Queen Anne's Lace - Acrylic Plein Aire Floral Landscape Painting by Pennsylvania Daily Painter Pat Koscienski

Queen Anne's Lace
12" x 6"
Acrylic on Canvas
Queen Anne's Lace was painted plein air along the Yellow Breeches Creek, McCormick Road, Lisburn, Pa. The Creek was so muddy from a rain the night before, that I had to pick a subject that didn't involve too much water. This made for a nice composition. This was painted plein air at the Orris House Inn Bed & Breakfast on 318 W. Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA. The owners, Barb and Kevin Jackson graciously invited our group to paint at their estate. The building is so complex I decided to paint a corner of their porch. The porch, rocking chair, & flag made a wonderful composition and reminded me of a scene from any small town, USA. Luz Mar - Original Acrylic Impressionistic Boat Painting of Lugar Amarilla Golf, Canary Islands by Pat Koscienski

Luz Mar
8" x 10"
Acrylic on Canvas
Luz Mar is a painting that I did for Bill Guffey's The Virtual Paintout Challenge for April. We were to visit the Canary Islands, use Goggle map street view, and wander around the streets until we found something we wanted to paint. ....a virtual paintout. I found this boat that was out of the water for, perhaps repairs, and a dramatic skyscape, that caught my eye rather quickly. I'm a low key painter, which one can see in this painting, but again, the camera does add more darkness. I tried to keep it looser than I have been painting for these challenges...I tend to tighten up when painting from photos. Ecce Homo after Caravaggio - Acrylic Study of Ecce Homo Behold Man on Canvas by Pennsylvania Daily Painter Pat Koscienski

Ecce Homo after Caravaggio
20x16
Acrylic
Ecce Homo was painted by Caravaggio c. 1604-5 and was done with oil on canvas. My rendition was painted in acrylic on canvas after Caravaggio...the upper left and lower right-hand corners of the photo is reflecting natural light from the window (it is much darker on the painting itself). It was done for Michelle Burnett's Challenge Following the Masters. This last challenge was to study the Italian Renaissance and choose a Master of that period and either paint something of that artist or a portion of it, or try to apply their technique to one of ours. I chose to paint this, not only for this challenge, but also to enter in the upcoming Easter Exhibit at Art and Soul Gallery in Lemoyne, Pennsylvania. This themed art exhibit entitled "Palm Sunday through Resurrection" will run run from Saturday, March 27th, 2010 to April 24, 2010. The opening reception will be Saturday, March 27th, 2010 from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. This gallery is located at the West Shore Farmer's Market, 2nd floor, 900 Market Street, Lemoyne, PA. Matching Set - Original Acrylic Impressionistic Painting of a Child and Dog by Pennsylvania Daily Painter Pat Koscienski

Matching Set
6x6
Acrylic on Canvas

Matching Set was painted for James Parker's blogspot Windows to the Words Challenge. The challenge for February was Children and Pets - Matching Sets. Several photographs were provided if we wanted to choose one or more to paint. This curly-headed little girl with her curly-headed dog caught my heart. What a winning smile she has. The dog was very difficult to paint...so black, I had to really struggle to find the eyes and anatomical definitions like the ears, nose, etc. Unfortunately, even though I finally completed the painting by the due date, I was unable to get it off to James to have it posted on his blogspot. San Jose, California - Original Acrylic Landscape Painting for Bill Guffey's Virtual Paintout Challenge by Pennsylvania Painter Pat Koscienski

San Jose, California
8 x 10
Acrylic on canvas
This painting was done for Bill Guffey's Virtual Paintout Challenge. This month we were to paint the San Francisco Bay area with Santa Rosa to the north, Atioch to the east, and San Jose to the south. Using the Google Map Street View, I found this beautiful scene in the San Jose area and loved the colors. There were several others of equal beauty, so hopefully I will have time to revisit and paint more of these rural scenes. I used a palette knife thinking I would loosen up when painting these photographs onto a small canvas, however, it still is a bit fussier than I like. But, sometimes, I just end the "conversation" between the painting and me, and just let it rest. Leo - Acrylic Impressionistic Painting of a Lion on Canvas by Pennsylvania Painter Pat Koscienski

"Leo"
11" x 14"
Acrylic
"Leo" was painted in acrylic on a textured gallery wrapped canvas. I started this out with the idea that I wanted to abstract him using a lot of texture. However, what I want and what I get, is not always the same. I always say, it is a conversation between me and the painting...the process or conversation continues until we are both in agreement. So, it is an impressionistic painting of a lion on a very textured gallery wrapped canvas. Robert Henri's Catharine - Acrylic Portrait on Canvas by Pennsylvania Daily Painter Pat Koscienski

Robert Henri's Catharine
7" x 5"
Acrylic
Robert Henri's Catharine was painted for Michelle Burnett's Following the Masters Challenge. This month's challenge was to be inspired by the work and philosophy of Robert Henri. When Henri's circle was rejected in the National Academy of Design exhibit in 1907, he organized a show of his own that included a group known as "The Eight"...Arthur Davies, Robert Henri, William Glackens, Ernest Lawson, George Luks, Maurice Prendergast, John Sloan, and Everett Shinn. It was revolutionary for it's subject, gritty urban scenes and "art for life's sake". Their work would later be characterized as the Ashcan School. We could choose to copy one of his works or be inspired to paint a dirty urban from the Ashcan School movement. I decided to copy one of his many portraits, Catharine. I, also, painted his street scene with snow which I will post later.

"Dan's Winter Barn" was painted from a photograph taken at a Dover farm where I painted plein aire many times in more clement weather. "All I Want For Christmas is...."by Pennsylvania Daily Painter Pat Koscienski

"All I Want For Christmas is...."
Mixed Media
6" x 6"

"All I Want For Christmas is...." was done for James Parker's blog Windows to the Words Art Challenge. The theme was to paint something we wanted for Christmas eg a diamond ring or new lap top computer, etc. I always like this doggie photo James had posted in a previous challenge. After giving some thought to what I really want for Christmas....love, everyone wants love (even dogs)....kisses, everyone wants kisses (even dogs)... Living so close to Hershey, Pa ...Hershey kisses came to mind quickly. I never realized, until I went to paint one, though, that the white paper tag reading "kisses" leans to the left to read kisses. Of course, I needed this to lean into the painting, so that is why it reads as a mirror image. Then, couldn't get the metallic glimmer in the red foil quite glimmery enough, so took the foil and paper off the kiss and collaged it to the painting and ate the chocolate. That's how easy an acrylic painting can turn into a mixed media painting. If interested in purchasing, contact Pat at patsfineart@hotmail.com

"Ala Monet" by Pennsylvania Daily Painter Pat Koscienski

"Ala Monet"
Acrylic
6" x 8"

"Ala Monet" is painted after Claude Monet's "Bathing at La Grenouillere"/"Les Bains de La Grenouillere". This was in reponse to a challenge on Michelle Burnett's blog Following the Masters. The challenge was to paint something of or like an artist that influenced us in some way. I chose to paint after Monet. This painting done by Monet was "executed outdoors, and the brushwork is a witness to the speed required to capture the transitory effects which such scenery offered." Also, "in this painting Monet's brushwork is vigorous", "has distinguishable brushmarks", "his brushwork is strongly descriptive". Monet rejected traditional, smooth brushwork which created an illusion of surface texture; instead, his varied handling helps to evoke the actural natural textures. All reasons why Monet has influenced my painting. "Noontime Activity" was painted for Bill Guffey's Virtual Paintout Challenge. Using Google Map Street View we were to tour through Mexico City and surrounding areas to find a scene to paint. This particular scene was from Victoria/Dolores, Cuauhtemoc, D.f., Mexico. "Winter at Fort Hunter" by Pennsylvania Daily Painter Pat Koscienski

"Winter at Fort Hunter"
31" x 43" framed
24" x 36" matted
18" x 30" unframed
Oil on shellacked 300lb w/c paper

"Winter at Fort Hunter" was painted from a photograph taken at Fort Hunter. Those familiar with Fort Hunter...my back is to the mansion door and I am facing south on the east shore of the Susquehanna River. The Rockville Bridge, the world's (?) longest, stone railroad bridge, is seen in the distance. It was a cold, crisp day and I think the colors reflect that. I tried to add a little warmth to it with the yellow ochers. It is an oil painting done on shellacked, 300lb watercolor paper. You can check out the sizes above from unframed, matted, and matted with frame. The frame is a plain, plein aire-like frame silverish in color which goes well with the alizarin crimson in the painting. At present, there is plexiglass over the painting. Since we got our first snowfall yesterday, in the Harrisburg area of South Central Pennsylvania, I couldn't resist posting this painting. "Cross of Hope" was done using a lot of acrylic medium to sculpt as well as paint this composition...color and texture being the main goal. 14" x 18"
"Turkey" was painted using a different technique than I was used to. Instead of mixing my linseed oil in my paint, I placed the linseed oil on the part of the turkey I was working on. When I applied my paint, it then "spread" since the paint was thick and the oil caused it to move. Thus giving a feathery look without painting each hair. It gives a very nice look, however, the drying time between applications of the linseed oil became annoying to me, since I tend to paint more quickly. "Peasant Girl" by Pat Koscienski

"Peasant Girl"
30" x 26"
Pastel on canson
SOLD
"Peasant Girl" was painted in Portrait/Figure class at York Art Association in York, PA. Amanda, the vice president of YAA at the time borrowed the costume from York Little Theater and posed for 2 of our classes. Painting portraits and figures from real life can be challenging, but can be quite a learning experience forcing one to see the fine shadows and color of the skin and contours of the underlying bone structure. "Tryin' To Make a Living" by Pat Koscienski

"Tryin' To Make A Living"
8" x 10"
Acrylic

This painting was done for Karin Jurick's DSFDF (Different Strokes From Different Folks) week 52-54 challenge "Airport Travelers". And, believe me...it was a "challenge". It's not 100% without error, however, I'm glad to have completed it and pleased that I was able to take on yet another subject that I would not have chosen on my own. As with each new challenge in life, learning and growth takes place. And, now I can (virtually) fly off to Halifax, Nova Scotia and paint a landscape there for my Virtual Paintout challenge. "Coy Koi" by Pat Koscienski

"Coy Koi"
5" x 7"
Acrylic on canvas
"Coy Koi" is one of my paintings that started off as a nonobjective abstract painting. My husband had just put in our pond so we were preoccupied with our Koi everyday. I think this intuitively came out in this painting. I usually put my abstracts on the http://www.dailypaintersabstract.blogspot.com/ , however, I see an almost representational painting in this one, so thought I would post this simultaneously on both blogspots. If you are interested in purchasing, contact me at patsfineart@hotmail.com and please stop and visit my website to see more of my representational and abstract works.

"Ala Van Gogh" by Pat Koscienski

"Ala Van Gogh"
5" x 7"
Acrylic on canvas

"Ala Van Gogh" was initially painted for Michelle Burnette's challenge on Follow the Masters blogspot. It was previously posted, but I made some changes on the part of the field that goes down to the stream. I thought I would post this painting with the initial painting so everyone could compare the change. However, being the novice that I am in the blogging world, I deleted my whole posting when I only wanted to delete just the photo that I posted (I realized the color needed adjusted). Learning keeps taking place, but it sometimes feels like it never ends. And, that can bring in frustration, especially when it becomes time consuming. LOL I'm sure you have all been through it. Sorry, I lost all your wonderful comments, to boot.

"Don't Brush Me Off" by Pat Koscienski

"Don't Brush Me Off"
6" x 6"
Acrylic
SOLD
This painting was done from a photo posted on James Parker's Windows to the Words blogspot. Even thought I did not have it completed for the challenge in September, I just couldn't resist painting this curious kitten. What a delightful little fur ball and doing what cats do best.
